Bible Verses About Strength: 28 Scriptures for Hard Days

There’s a particular kind of tired that doesn’t go away with sleep. I hit it about four years ago, and I couldn’t have told you what I needed — only that I needed something.

What I did was start sketching scripture. Not because I was strong, but because I wasn’t. These are the verses I kept coming back to, grouped by what you might actually be walking through today rather than in the order they appear in the Bible.

What is the best Bible verse for strength?

Philippians 4:13 is the most quoted: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” But the honest answer is that the best verse is the one that matches your day.

That verse gets printed on more mugs than any other, and it’s worth knowing what Paul was actually writing about when he wrote it — contentment in scarcity, from a prison cell, not achievement. You can read Philippians 4 in full on Bible Gateway. If you’re afraid, Isaiah 41:10 will do more for you. If you’re exhausted, Isaiah 40:31 will. That’s why the list below is grouped by circumstance instead of by book.

What does the Bible actually mean by “strength”?

In scripture, strength is almost never something you generate. It’s something God supplies, usually in the exact moment you run out of your own.

That’s the pattern running through every verse on this page, and it’s the opposite of how the word usually gets used. Paul puts it most bluntly in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Not despite weakness. In it.

It’s also why so many of the strongest biblical scenes are of people who look outmatched — a shepherd boy in front of a giant, a nation at the edge of a sea with an army behind them. That’s the whole reason those are the stories I paint.

Bible verses about strength when you’re afraid

When fear is the problem, scripture’s answer is almost always presence — not “be braver,” but “I am with you.”

1. Isaiah 41:10 — “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Bible Gateway)

2. Joshua 1:9 — “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Bible Gateway)

3. Psalm 27:1 — “The LORD is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?” (Bible Gateway)

4. Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Bible Gateway)

5. 2 Timothy 1:7 — “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” (Bible Gateway)

Bible verses about strength when you’re exhausted

For exhaustion, scripture doesn’t offer more effort. It offers rest, renewal, and the joy of the Lord as an actual source of strength.

6. Isaiah 40:31 — “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Bible Gateway)

This is the verse I get asked for more than any other, which is why it’s one of the eight designs in our free Bible verse phone wallpapers — it’s free, and it puts the verse where you’ll actually see it at 6am.

“I bought ‘Jesus Walks on Water’ for my mom and she absolutely loved it. The Christian wall art is so peaceful and inspiring.” — Grace Simmons, a real customer review. That piece depicts the same Matthew 14 story as several verses on this list, which is why it keeps coming up here.

\n\n7. Matthew 11:28 — “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Bible Gateway)

8. 2 Corinthians 12:9 — “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'” (Bible Gateway)

9. Nehemiah 8:10 — “Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” (Bible Gateway)

10. Psalm 73:26 — “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Bible Gateway)

11. Habakkuk 3:19 — “The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.” (Bible Gateway)

Bible verses about strength when you’re facing something bigger than you

When the thing in front of you is genuinely bigger than you are, scripture’s answer is that the fight was never yours to win alone.

12. 1 Samuel 17:45 — “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” (Bible Gateway)

13. 1 Samuel 17:47 — “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” (Bible Gateway)

Looking at actual sales across the whole catalog, David and Goliath is the best-selling scripture-based piece we make — not a guess, the real number.

These two lines are the reason I painted David and Goliath the way I did. David isn’t drawn as a warrior — he’s drawn as a boy who knows exactly whose fight it is. It’s the piece that ends up in more home offices and studies than anything else I’ve made.

14. Exodus 14:14 — “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Bible Gateway)

Moses says this with the Egyptian army closing in and the sea in front of him — which is the exact instant Moses Parts the Red Sea depicts. Read the whole chapter if you only read one thing from this list.

15. Ephesians 6:10 — “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” (Bible Gateway)

16. Revelation 12:7 — “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.” (Bible Gateway)

Bible verses about strength when you’re grieving

Scripture doesn’t ask the grieving to be strong. It says God is nearest to the brokenhearted, which is a different promise entirely.

17. Psalm 34:18 — “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Bible Gateway)

18. Psalm 147:3 — “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Bible Gateway)

19. 2 Corinthians 4:8–9 — “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (Bible Gateway)

20. Psalm 23:4 — “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Bible Gateway)

This is one of the psalms people ask me to put on a wall most often, which is why Psalm 23 exists as a framed canvas.

Bible verses about strength when you’re waiting

Waiting is its own kind of hard, and scripture treats it as a strength problem rather than a patience problem.

21. Psalm 27:14 — “Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” (Bible Gateway)

22. Psalm 31:24 — “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.” (Bible Gateway)

23. Isaiah 43:2 — “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Bible Gateway)

24. Psalm 121:1–2 — “I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Bible Gateway)

What is the best Bible verse for strength?

Philippians 4:13, where Paul says he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength, is the most quoted verse on the subject. For fear, Isaiah 41:10 fits better; for exhaustion, Isaiah 40:31.

What does the Bible say about strength in hard times?

Scripture consistently presents strength as something God supplies rather than something you generate, most directly in 2 Corinthians 12:9, where Paul writes that God’s power is made perfect in weakness.

Which Bible verse says God gives you strength?

Psalm 29:11 says it most plainly – the LORD gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace. Isaiah 41:10 and Psalm 28:7 say the same thing.

What is a short Bible verse about strength?

Nehemiah 8:10 – the joy of the LORD is your strength – is just seven words. Psalm 46:1 and Exodus 15:2 are both under fifteen words.

What Bible verse did David say to Goliath?

In 1 Samuel 17:45, David tells Goliath he comes against him in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel.

Which Bible story is the best example of strength?

David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 is the most cited, because David’s strength is explicitly God’s rather than his own – the battle belongs to the LORD, not to him.
