Pastor Appreciation Month 2026: When It Is and How Churches Celebrate

Every October, churches across the US set aside time to say thank you to the people who carry them the rest of the year. If you have landed here because someone in your congregation mentioned it and you are not sure what it is or when it falls, here is the short answer first.

When is Pastor Appreciation Month 2026?

Pastor Appreciation Month runs the whole of October 2026. Within it, Clergy Appreciation Day falls on Sunday, 11 October 2026 — always the second Sunday of the month.

Most churches treat the day as the focal point and the month as the runway: a card in week one, a shared meal in week two, a gift presented on the Sunday itself. There is no rule about it. Some congregations do one thoughtful thing. Others build a whole month around it.

Where did Pastor Appreciation Month come from?

It is a modern observance, not a liturgical one. The widely credited origin is Focus on the Family, which began promoting a Clergy Appreciation Day in the early 1990s to encourage congregations to actively bless the families who serve them. It grew from a single Sunday into a month as churches found one day was not really enough.

The idea behind it is much older than the observance, though.

“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine.” — 1 Timothy 5:17, NKJV

Paul writes something similar to the Thessalonians — to recognise those who work among you, and to esteem them highly in love because of their work (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13). And the writer of Hebrews frames it from the pastor’s side: they keep watch over your souls, and they will give an account for it (Hebrews 13:17).

That last one is worth sitting with. The weight a pastor carries is not really visible from the pew.

What do pastors actually carry?

A pastor’s week is not the sermon. The sermon is the part you see.

The rest is hospital corridors at odd hours. Funerals for people they loved too. Marriages held together in a back office on a Tuesday. Budget meetings. The family who left and never said why. And then Sunday comes around again, and they have to stand up and have something true to say.

Pastors’ families carry it alongside them — often more quietly, and usually without anyone thinking to thank them at all.

That is the honest reason this month exists. Not because pastors need praise, but because encouragement is genuinely load-bearing, and most people never get around to saying the thing they meant to say.

How do churches celebrate Pastor Appreciation Month?

1. Words, written down

Ask people to write specifically. Not “thank you for everything” but “the thing you said at my father’s funeral is the reason I came back.” Specific is what gets kept. Generic gets recycled.

2. Rest, actually given

An extra Sunday off, a covered week, a meal train so nobody has to cook — these cost the congregation coordination rather than money, and pastors often value them above anything wrapped.

3. Something that stays on the wall

4. A gift from the whole congregation, not twelve small ones

Twelve people each spending $15 gets you twelve mugs. Twelve people pooling $15 gets you something that means something. If you are organising, collect first and buy once.

5. Remember the pastor’s spouse and children

They gave up evenings, holidays and a lot of privacy, and nobody voted for them. Include them by name.

What if you are a church of thirty people?

Then thirty people writing one honest paragraph each is a more powerful gift than anything a megachurch could buy. Scale is not the point here. Specificity is.

Planning ahead

The one practical thing worth saying: if the gift needs to arrive by Sunday 11 October, order it in September. Physical pieces are made to order and shipped, and the last week of September is when this gets tight.
